Arguably, the best romantic comedy of all time, when When Harry Met Sally has set the standard and has tried to be recreated ever since. It tells a simple story of two people that keep having chance encounters, they argue and have lengthy debates on whether men and women can have platonic friendships and ultimately fall for each other. It has also provided us with that iconic organism scene.

The Notebook

The Notebook is the ultimate tear jerker which sparked our love of Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams, which was later replaced with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The story follows the young lovers who love affair was tragically cut short after they were separated in the midst of World War 2. Years later, they are reunited despite having different life paths. If you don’t shed a tear for this one, your dead inside.

Released just last year “To all the boys I’ve loved before” is one of the best recent teenage romantic comedies. The basic premise is a teenage girl’s secret love letters are exposed and wreak havoc on her love life with both hilarious and cringe-worthy outcomes. What I loved about this film was you get invested in the characters, you really end up rooting for Lana, as if your own happiness depends on it

Crazy Stupid Love

This is a Ryan Gosling heavy list, but what is Valentine’s day if you aren’t necking a bottle of wine and swooning over Ryan Gosling. Cal played by Steve Carell is a middle-aged husband whose life is turned upside down when his wife asks for a divorce. He ends up befriending a guy in a bar Jacob, played by Ryan Gosling, who helps him build his confidence in learning to pick up girls at bars. Things take a turn when Cal finds out Jacob is dating his daughter Hannah played by Emma Stone.

My Best Friend’s Wedding

You can’t have a rom-com list without a nod to Julia Roberts, the queen of romantic comedies. In My Best Friend’s Wedding, Julie effectively plays a homewrecker. When her long-term friend reveals he’s engaged, she releases she has feelings for him and does everything in her power to stop the wedding going ahead merely days before it.

Obvious Child

Not an obvious rom-com to make the list, Obvious Child is a dark romantic comedy that deals with the sensitive topic of abortion. It tells the story of a Donna, played by Jenny Slate, a 28-year old stand-up living in New York who after been dumped by her boyfriend has a one night stand which results in pregnancy.

Atonement 

More of a tragic love story but a great film none the less. Based on the book of the same name, Atonement is a romantic war drama starring James McAvoy, Kiera Knightley and Saoirse Ronan. A young Saoirse Ronan changes the course of several lives after a lie she tells accusing her older sister’s lover of a crime he did not commit.

And the third Ryan Gosling film to make the list. La la land sees Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone reunited for a classic musical film. La La Land tells the story of Mia an aspiring actress and Sebastian a jazz musician and they’re struggles both pursuing love and their dreams.
